Chief Banking Officer (CBO)
The Chief Banking Officer (CBO) is responsible for leading and overseeing the organization's core banking business, including retail banking, corporate banking, commercial banking, and treasury-related banking services. This role drives business growth, profitability, customer experience, and strategic expansion while ensuring strong governance and regulatory compliance.
The CBO plays a critical role in shaping banking strategy, expanding market share, and ensuring sustainable revenue growth across all banking portfolios.
Key Responsibilities
- Banking Strategy & Business Growth
Develop and execute the overall banking business strategy Drive growth across retail, corporate, SME, and commercial banking segments Identify new market opportunities and product innovations Achieve revenue, profitability, and portfolio growth targets
- Retail & Corporate Banking Operations
Oversee retail banking services including deposits, lending, and customer solutions Manage corporate and institutional banking relationships Strengthen SME banking and financial inclusion strategies Ensure high-quality service delivery across all banking channels
- Credit & Lending Portfolio Management
Oversee credit underwriting standards and lending policies Ensure portfolio quality and minimize non-performing assets (NPA) Approve high-value credit proposals (within delegated authority) Strengthen credit risk governance in collaboration with CRO
- Treasury & Liquidity Coordination
Coordinate with treasury function to ensure liquidity and capital efficiency Support asset-liability management (ALM) strategies Optimize funding structures and balance sheet performance Ensure financial stability and regulatory ratios compliance
- Customer Experience & Relationship Management
Enhance customer acquisition, retention, and satisfaction strategies Improve digital banking and omnichannel service experience Build long-term relationships with key corporate and retail clients Ensure service excellence across all banking touchpoints
- Regulatory Compliance & Governance
Ensure compliance with central bank regulations and banking laws Work closely with compliance, risk, and audit functions Maintain strong governance and ethical banking practices Support regulatory inspections and reporting requirements
- Digital Banking & Innovation
Drive digital transformation in banking services Promote fintech partnerships and innovation initiatives Enhance mobile banking, internet banking, and digital onboarding Improve operational efficiency through automation
- Stakeholder & Board Engagement
Report banking performance to CEO and Board of Directors Provide strategic insights on market trends and risks Represent the organization in industry forums and stakeholder meetings Maintain relationships with regulators, investors, and key partners
- Leadership & Team Management
Lead senior banking executives and divisional heads Build high-performance banking teams Drive talent development and succession planning Foster a performance-driven and customer-centric culture
Key Requirements
Education
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Finance, Business Administration, Economics, or related field MBA or professional banking qualifications are highly preferred
Experience
15–20+ years of experience in banking or financial services Proven leadership in senior banking roles (e.g., Head of Retail Banking, Head of Corporate Banking, COO Banking Division) Strong experience in commercial, retail, or investment banking environments
