Lead Full-stack Engineer
Added 5 hours agoAbout FundamentalXR
FundamentalXR is the global leader in immersive surgical training. We build a high-fidelity "flight simulator for surgery" that combines VR, haptics (touch), and AI to help surgeons rehearse complex procedures in a safe, digital environment.
Our platform is used by major healthcare institutions and medical device companies worldwide. To support this, we need a robust, scalable backend and a developer experience that allows our engineering teams to move fast without breaking things.
The Role
We are seeking a highly experienced, hands-on Lead Engineer to drive the technical direction, development, and scalability of our core product platform. This role is a strategic blend of application engineering and platform enablement, ensuring our systems are robust, secure, and designed to maximise developer velocity.
You will be instrumental in elevating the day-to-day operations of our diverse technology stack and spearheading strategic initiatives like data-driven continuous delivery and operational excellence.
This position reports directly to the CPTO and leads a small team of full-stack and cloud engineers.
Key Responsibilities
Full-Stack & Application Leadership
Hands-on Engineering: Act as the primary hands-on engineer and team lead, being hands-on while providing technical leadership across our full-stack codebase and developer platform.
Architecture Ownership: Own the technical direction and service design patterns for our entire API and Cloud (AWS) platforms.
Cross-Functional Delivery: Contribute directly to key product features and initiatives, including full-stack development backend services (TypeScript / NodeJS / Python), and frontend applications (React and Electron apps).
Platform Engineering & Developer Experience (DevEx)
Developer Experience (DevEx): Continuously improve the developer experience by simplifying local setup and workflows for developers. Build tooling and templates that streamline building, testing, and deployment.
Continuous Delivery and Automation: Design, implement, and maintain robust CI/CD workflows (e.g., GitHub Actions) for all applications (NodeJS, React, Unity, and Electron), ensuring fast, reliable pipelines and evolving release strategies as the product grows. Develop automation to enable self-service tools for engineering teams.
Strategic Roadmapping: Act as the main bridge between the platform team and leadership, providing recommendations into the infrastructure/platform roadmap and communicating risks, technical debt, and opportunities for improvement.
Reliability, Security, and Operations
Observability & Operations: Serve as the go-to expert for operational tooling and observability (system logging, monitoring, alerting, error & performance monitoring). Lead the evolution of our monitoring, introduce tracing, and use incident learnings to drive systematic improvements.
Security & Compliance: Take technical ownership of security concerns on the backend, implementing security requirements (e.g., ISO27001-related work) and designing secure IAM policies, secrets handling, and access control in AWS.
Incident Response & Reliability: Drive and participate in incident response, helping to diagnose and resolve production issues, capturing learnings, and automating follow-up work (runbooks, hardening).
Required Skills and Experience
Full-Stack and Application Engineering
Advanced experience with backend web services (TypeScript / NodeJS), with a proven ability to integrate and support frontend applications (React and Electron apps).
Strong experience with SQL and NoSQL databases and document storage (e.g., PostgreSQL, DynamoDB).
Confidence in leveraging agentic AI tooling (e.g., Codex, Claude Code to accelerate development and administrative work, with a focus on validating output.
Platform & Cloud Expertise
Deep expertise in AWS infrastructure (including networking, IAM, security, and cost management) and significant experience with Serverless Framework.
Proven ability to manage and maintain infrastructure using Infrastructure-as-Code (IaaC) principles.
Extensive knowledge of DevOps principles and hands-on experience designing and maintaining CI/CD pipelines (e.g., GitHub Actions).
Leadership and Strategic Impact
Technical Leadership: Proven ability to lead design discussions, conduct code reviews, and mentor/support other engineers.
Service Mindset: Experience conducting user research, defining roadmaps, and tracking metrics (e.g., onboarding time, adoption rates) to treat the platform as an internal product.
Strong focus on security, performance, scalability, and reliability, with a commitment to upholding and promoting industry best practices.
