Job Description

The Avery Dennison Identification Solutions Group North America is looking for a Controls Engineer to join the team at our manufacturing site in Fort Wayne, Indiana. In this position, you will report to the Engineering Manager and serve as the site’s primary technical expert for industrial control systems, OT networks, and automation projects. You will drive continuous improvement, lead capital upgrades, and provide high-level troubleshooting support to our very capable maintenance team.

Primary Responsibilities & Essential Functions:

  • Project & Automation Engineering Design, program, implement, and maintain advanced PLC, HMI, and SCADA systems across the facility.

    • Manage the facility’s OT networks, working with the corporate IT Department to maintain industrial cybersecurity adherence and data integrity.

    • Lead capital projects and equipment installation and upgrades, including the ongoing strategic migration of legacy hardware.

    • Create, modify, and maintain electrical schematics, panel layouts, and network topographies using AutoCAD.

    • Assist in the development of capital plans to support the divisional automation, drives, and controls strategy.

    • Drive standardization of control systems across diverse equipment sets (Allen Bradley, Siemens, ABB, Automation Direct, Mitsubishi, Lenze); assess gaps against best practices and develop plans to close them.

    • Identify safety issues, support safety initiatives, and recommend and implement effective solutions.

    • Provide high-level troubleshooting support to the site’s skilled maintenance department for complex controls, drive, or network issues.

    • Perform root-cause problem solving on process issues associated with equipment performance and implement long-term, engineered solutions.

    • Provide support for technology upgrade projects to improve product quality and manufacturing effectiveness.

    • Conduct training for maintenance and operations personnel on new systems, proper machine adjustments, calibrations and operations.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent technical discipline required.

  • 3+ years of experience in a controls, automation, or electrical engineering function in a manufacturing environment, with 2+ years of capital projects experience.

  • PLC Expertise: Strong programming and troubleshooting capability with Allen Bradley (ControlLogix, CompactLogix, SLC500, PLC-5) and Siemens (S7-315F/SIMATIC). Experience with ABB, Automation Direct, Mitsubishi, and Lenze is a strong plus.

  • Drive Systems: Proven experience with drive configuration, troubleshooting, and migrations. Required experience includes Allen Bradley Powerflex (750 & 525 series) and Siemens (S120, G120, MasterDrives, Ecodrives).

  • HMI / SCADA: Strong proficiency with Aveva/Wonderware for both HMI applications and plant-wide data collection.

  • OT networking: Knowledge of MS Windows server helpful.

  • Design Skills: Proficiency in AutoCAD for electrical design.

  • Knowledge of Electrical Codes: NEC, NFPA 70E, NFPA 79, IEEE 3000.

  • Knowledge of PLC standards: IEC 61131-3.  LD, FBD, ST, SFC

  • Safety Knowledge: Understanding of Safety PLCs, safety circuits, safety relays

  • Work Style: High-energy, self-directed self-starter capable of executing multiple projects simultaneously with minimal supervision.

  • Communication: Good verbal and written communication skills to effectively collaborate with IT, Maintenance, Operations, and Management.
