PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop and lead a team of accounting professionals.  Establish and manage performance expectations.  Mentor and provide ongoing performance feedback to team.
  • Lead a Reinsurance Accounting team in the execution of all reinsurance accounting, cash transfer, and reporting-related tasks. 
  • Primary ownership of external reinsurance, including communications with external reinsurance partners.
  • Learn and master complex reinsurance accounting for numerous reinsurance treaties.
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of automated reinsurance system.
  • Execute controls accurately during the year.  Help identify control gaps to ensure an effective control environment.
  • Work with the Director of Reinsurance Accounting to represent the Athene USA reinsurance accounting function on various teams/meetings/projects within the organization.
  • Actively participate in internal and/or external discussions on new treaty design -including creating settlements and accounting when new reinsurance treaties are executed.
  • Work with the Director of Reinsurance Accounting to interpret and implement complex changes under tight deadlines.
  • Serve as contact for internal and external auditors for STAT and GAAP audits of reinsurance activity.
  • Lead and/or assist with departmental projects as assigned.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting.
  • At least 5 years of related experience; with experience in public accounting or in the insurance industry preferred.
  • Experience needs to include at least 3 years of demonstrated leadership experience.
  • Strong analytical skills, with the ability to identify, research, and develop solutions to accounting issues.
  • Strong communication skills, with demonstrated ability to proactively communicate progress and status, and timely escalate issues with proposed solutions, as necessary.
  • Strong organizational skills, with demonstrated ability to meet tight deadlines.
  • Experience in Statutory or US GAAP accounting in a life insurance company is strongly preferred but not required.
  • Experience with Oracle, Essbase, and Hyperion is preferred.
  • Strong computer skills including experience with accounting software and Microsoft Office products including Excel and Word.
