As a Lead Cloud Engineer at Dots Africa, you will join a growing and highly capable technology team made up of software engineers, platform specialists, data professionals, and IT practitioners. This role is senior, hands-on, and strategic. You will be trusted to take full ownership of our cloud and infrastructure landscape and to lead its evolution as the business scales.

About You (Candidate):

Dots Africa is entering a new phase of platform and infrastructure maturity, and we are looking for a senior cloud professional who can take full ownership of our cloud strategy and execution.

You are the person teams go to when they need answers about cloud architecture, scalability, reliability, security, cost optimisation, or operational best practices. You don’t wait for direction. You assess, decide, and act.

You are equally comfortable designing long-term cloud strategy and rolling up your sleeves to fix real production issues. You understand what “good” looks like in cloud environments because you’ve built and operated them before. When something goes wrong, you are calm, methodical, and decisive.

Our teams should learn from you, not the other way around. You bring clarity, structure, and confidence to everything cloud and infrastructure related.

Skills that Will Give You a Boost:

Deep hands-on expertise with Microsoft Azure in production environments
Strong working knowledge of AWS and the ability to design equivalent architectures across platforms
Proven experience designing secure, scalable, and resilient cloud architectures
Strong background in cloud networking (VNets/VPCs, routing, private connectivity, DNS)
Infrastructure as Code expertise (Terraform, Bicep, Pulumi, ARM, CloudFormation)
Experience with containerised platforms (ACA, AKS, EKS, Docker)
Strong understanding of cloud security, identity, and access management
Experience implementing monitoring, logging, and alerting strategies
Proven ability to optimise cloud costs without sacrificing performance or reliability
Experience working in regulated or compliance-driven environments
Strong leadership, communication, and decision-making skills

Key Responsibilities:

Own and lead the organisation’s cloud and infrastructure strategy across Azure and AWS.
Take full responsibility for the design, implementation, and operation of all cloud infrastructure.
Assess the current cloud and infrastructure landscape and drive immediate improvements where required.
Define and enforce cloud architecture standards, patterns, and best practices.
Design and maintain highly available, secure, and resilient systems, including DR and failover strategies.
Own cloud security posture, including identity, access controls, network security, and platform hardening.
Establish and maintain monitoring, logging, alerting, and observability across all environments.
Drive cost optimisation initiatives and ensure cloud spend is well understood, controlled, and efficient.
Ensure operational excellence through documentation, runbooks, and clear ownership models.
Partner closely with engineering, DevOps, security, and compliance teams to enable scalable delivery.
Act as the final authority on cloud and infrastructure decisions.
Troubleshoot complex infrastructure and production issues and lead root-cause analysis efforts.
Ensure environments meet performance, reliability, and compliance requirements at all times.
Stay current with cloud platform advancements and continuously evolve the infrastructure strategy.
Mentor and uplift engineers on cloud best practices, architecture, and operational maturity.

Requirements:

8+ years of experience in infrastructure, cloud engineering, or platform engineering roles.
Strong production experience with Microsoft Azure, including networking, compute, storage, and identity.
Solid hands-on experience with AWS and multi-cloud architecture principles.
Proven experience designing and operating cloud platforms at scale.
Strong Infrastructure as Code experience.
Experience with container platforms and modern cloud-native architectures.
Deep understanding of cloud security principles and shared responsibility models.
Experience implementing monitoring, logging, and alerting solutions.
Strong understanding of reliability, scalability, and performance engineering.
Ability to work independently and take ownership from day one.
Experience operating in regulated or high-trust environments is highly advantageous.
Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
Ability to clearly explain complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Bachelor’s degree in IT, Computer Science, or equivalent experience preferred.
Cloud certifications are beneficial but not a substitute for real-world experience.
