We are looking for an experienced SAS Specialist with deep expertise in SAS Viya 4 running on OpenShift to support a large-scale data migration project, moving legacy SAS SPDS (Scalable Performance Data Server) environments to an external relational database platform. The role involves modernizing existing SAS workloads, rebuilding ETL processes using SQL, and ensuring a smooth transition of workflows from Enterprise Guide to SAS Studio.
Key Responsibilities:
Data Migration & Modernization
- Lead and support the migration of data assets from SAS SPDS to an external relational database (e.g., PostgreSQL, Oracle, SQL Server, etc.).
- Analyze existing SPDS structures, tables, indexes, performance features, and translate them into optimized relational schemas.
- Recreate and optimize ETL flows using SAS/SQL in SAS Viya.
- Validate migrated datasets and ensure consistency, quality, and performance in the target environment.
SAS Viya 4 & OpenShift
- Work with SAS Viya 4 deployed on OpenShift; collaborate with platform teams on deployment, configuration, and troubleshooting.
- Understand CAS (Cloud Analytic Services) operations, memory usage, CASLIBs, and distributed processing.
- Optimize SAS code to leverage distributed computing capabilities in Viya.
Workflow Modernization
- Assess and convert existing SAS 9.x workflows, including Enterprise Guide projects, stored processes, and scheduled jobs, into SAS Studio and Viya equivalents.
- Work with users to help them transition from Enterprise Guide to SAS Studio.
- Rebuild or refactor legacy macros, autoexec routines, and supporting components as needed.
ETL Development & SQL Programming
- Develop efficient SQL transformations and ETL routines within SAS Viya.
- Optimize queries for both SAS CAS and the target relational database environment.
- Ensure that ETL jobs meet required SLAs and performance expectations.
Collaboration & Documentation
- Work closely with data architects, platform engineers, and business users to understand existing pipelines and requirements.
- Provide technical guidance and best practices for SAS development in Viya.
- Document data migration procedures, ETL logic, operational workflows, and code changes thoroughly.
Required Qualifications
- 5+ years of hands-on SAS programming experience, including BASE SAS, SAS/SQL, and SAS macro language.
- Strong working knowledge of SAS Viya 4 (CAS concepts, CAS actions, CASLIBs, distributed execution).
- Experience with SAS environments running on Kubernetes/OpenShift.
- Proven experience migrating data from SAS SPDS to relational databases.
- Solid understanding of relational databases and SQL performance tuning.
- Experience with Enterprise Guide project analysis and conversion to SAS Studio.
- Ability to troubleshoot SAS code, performance issues, and data inconsistencies.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to advise business users.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with Postgres, Oracle, or SQL Server migrations.
Background in large-scale modernization projects.
Familiarity with CI/CD concepts and source control for SAS (Git).
Knowledge of Linux environments and shell scripting.
Experience with Python, REST APIs, or integration between SAS and external systems.
