Medical Illustrator

The Medical Illustrator works closely with Scientific Services, Client Services, and other members of our in-house Creative & Digital teams to create a wide range of creative deliverables. They are expected to receive written scientific content, briefs, and/or existing figures to create scientific artwork that is clear and engaging to the target audience. Medical Illustrators report to Associate Directors and VPs of Medical Illustration or Creative Directors.
Primary responsibilities:
- Develop high end, scientifically accurate 2D and 3D animated medical content to be used in a wide variety of media including videos, websites, and interactive applications
- Sketch and storyboard illustrations and animations that require precise planning and visual storytelling
- Create high-quality 2D vector or raster medical illustrations to be used in print and digital formats
- Work with Client and Scientific Services to interpret complex medical content into accurate, clear, and compelling visuals
- Closely align illustrations and animations to pre-existing styles and brand guidelines, when appropriate
- Review provided project materials and direction for execution of high-quality project deliverables
- Self QC work to ensure that all content is incorporated correctly and that all revision requests are taken in
- Collaborate with creative supervisors, designers, and developers bringing a high level of polish to creative deliverables
- Research new creative techniques, ideas, and trends to present and incorporate into projects
- Work closely with Creative Project Managers to communicate project status, timelines, and progress updates
- Accurately record time spent on projects, and aim to complete work within the budgeted number of hours, reporting any issues that may affect projects to senior staff
- Ensure that all working files and deliverables are regularly uploaded to the server, and are organized to optimize version control and fit the server structure guidelines
Requirements:
- Master’s degree in Medical Illustration, or a bachelor’s degree with a strong portfolio and relevant experience
- Background and knowledge in human anatomy and human physiology
- Background and knowledge in cell and molecular biology
- Excellent organizational, communication, collaboration, and time management skills
- Skilled in independent learning/research to understand assigned topics
- Strong ability to comprehend complex science and execution of clear and accurate illustrations
- Skilled using UCSF Chimera to access and edit molecular structures from PubChem or the PDB
- Meticulous, detail-oriented, and ability to self QC for errors
- Ability to manage concurrent projects and deadlines in a fast-paced environment
- Exceptional raster and vector illustration skills using Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator
- Foundation with Autodesk Maya and Zbrush and a basic understanding of the full 3D pipeline (modeling, texturing, rigging, animation, fx, lighting, and rendering)
- Proficient in compositing and editing 3D rendered footage in Adobe After Effects
- Foundational motion graphics skills in Adobe After Effects
- Skilled with laying out content and graphics alongside artwork, or fitting artwork into existing designs
- Enthusiastic to learn and continue developing creative and interpersonal skills
- Receptive to iterative improvement and ability to implement instruction and feedback to creative deliverables from internal team members and clients
Non-essential desirable skills:
- Understanding of colour theory and typography
- Knowledge of immunology and histology
- Proficiency in Adobe Premiere and InDesign
- Experience using Well Said Labs for scratch track VO
- Knowledge of leveraging AI tools
- Substance 3d suite
- SideFX Houdini
- Unity and/or Unreal Engine
