Software Engineer, Co-op
Added 4 hours agoThe Role
This role is specifically for students participating in the Northeastern University co-op program and is a full-time (40 hours/week), 6-month opportunity aligned to the July–December co-op cycle.
Candidates must be based in the Boston area. While Function Health is a fully remote company, this role includes one week of in-person onboarding in Boston, followed by monthly in-person meetups for the duration of the program.
Function Health is building the most comprehensive health platform on the planet. The Ecosystem team is responsible for powering how Function Health connects with the outside world. We build and maintain the integrations, data pipelines, and partner services that let members bring in data from wearable devices, share their health information with external AI tools like ChatGPT, and connect with a growing network of health and wellness partners.
This is a high-impact role at the intersection of systems integration and health data. Your work won’t stay behind the scenes. It will directly shape how members interact with their health data across the platforms and tools they already use every day.
What You'll Work On
You’ll join a small team tackling real, high-impact problems at the core of the Ecosystem experience:
- External AI Data Sharing. Build the Data Sharing Service that lets members control how their health data flows to and from external AI partners like ChatGPT and Perplexity. Work on FHIR-compliant APIs, Auth0 integration, and the frontend flows that let members connect and revoke access from their dashboard.
- Wearables and Device Integrations. Help members get more out of their Apple Watch, Oura, Withings, and other devices by improving our wearables pipeline. Work on data gap detection, reconnection flows, and the infrastructure that ingests daily metrics like sleep, exercise, and heart rate into the Function Health platform.
- Health Data Interoperability. Help build the systems that allow Function Health to securely exchange member health data with external partners using industry-standard protocols. Work on the APIs, authentication flows, and services that make it possible for members to use their Function Health data wherever they want it.
What We're Looking For
- AI-native workflow. You already use LLMs as a daily tool to write, debug, and reason through problems. You know how to steer a model toward useful output and when to stop prompting and start thinking.
- Strong fundamentals in backend or full-stack development
- Interest in LLMs, agentic systems, and applied AI
- Comfortable working with APIs, data pipelines, and cloud environments (GCP experience is a plus, not a requirement)
- Curiosity about healthcare, clinical data, or how technology can improve health outcomes
- A bias toward making things simpler, not just adding more
- Currently pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field
